About this Site

Arawak City is a attempt to build a radical alternative identity for the location known as Columbus, Ohio to the out-side world.

It is a rejection of the commodity values that seem to predominate the concrete landscape of Columbus and the imperialist history of being named after a man who help initiate one of the largest genocides in the history of Earth.

The Arawak people lived in a sustainable fashion on the islands now known as the Caribbean until they met Cristopher Columbus, who immediately saw their gentle indigenous lifestyle and attitude as an opportunity to impose slavery.

But enough of the brief history lesson, Arawak City as a meme was started by anti-authoritarians some-time in the period of time known as the 1990s, and this particular incarnation of it started around 2003 by a group of individuals whom clustered their identities under the guise of the Arawak City Brain Trust. The site was created to serve as a zine and counter-cultural alternative to the mainstream weekly papers. Since then the situation has evolved significantly and this site has been down since around 2006, or at least not particularly useful while the idea of Arawak City has continued to grow.

We are now re-launching this site with various lofty ideals, but we'll see how far the actual construction of it goes.
